Albert Einstein once said that “Everything that is really great and inspiring is created by the individual who can labor in freedom.” What a profound statement and he is absolutely right.
Yet this Labor Day, some workers in Pennsylvania still do not labor in freedom. Many are forced to pay dues to a labor union in order to gain or keep a job. Their hard earned money is taken from them against their will and given to a union who claims to represent their interests, yet we see the unions use that very money to support causes that work against their members.
Unions today provide millions of dollars to support climate change initiatives, the very same initiatives that are killing off the jobs of those union members working in the coal industry. The unions support and advocate for illegal immigration but at what cost to their members. Unions see illegals as another source of dues paying members but these same illegals are taking jobs from their union members and lowering wages as well. How does that help the members they claim to represent? Labor unions have also been the driving force behind the push to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour. This minimum wage hike is having devastating effects on businesses in the cities where it has been implemented leading to huge job losses. How does that help their members when their jobs are disappearing?
This Labor Day it is time to rededicate ourselves to passing a right to work law in Pennsylvania. We must bring freedom to all workers and allow them to make the choice about joining a union or not. Labor Day is an American holiday, but forcing people to give their hard earned money to any organization against their will is un-American. Let’s work together to get this done!
