Our organization has long prided itself in taking the position that we believe in VOLUNTARY unionization. What we believe is that individuals should have the option of choosing whether or not to join or pay dues to that union without having their job being held ransom over their head. The situation with Northwestern University is no different, however there are some additional questions:
1. The student athletes have all stated they believe their scholarship is their pay and they aren’t asking for additional money. Where then is the money going to come from to pay their union dues?
2. This “workforce” that’s being created is going to have 20-25% turnover every year when the senior class leaves and a new class enters. Are the unions willing to allow annual recertification every year?
3. What happens when a student’s grades makes him academically ineligible? Will the union be able to file a grievance to be able to keep him/her from being “fired”?
Of course none of this addresses the constitutionality of the three “recess appointments” who are set to rule on the appeal that is sure to come.
There is no doubt that there is an argument to be made that the current system under which our student athletes play needs to be adjusted. The real question is, are they biting off more than they bargained for by trying to collectively bargain?
